To understand the 2021 special issue, one must recognize the weight of tradition it carries. Sonnenfreunde originated in the post-WWII era, when FKK symbolized a break from totalitarian repression and a return to natural, democratic living (Andrieu, 2012). By the 1990s and 2000s, many naturist publications faced declining circulation due to mainstreaming of casual nudity, legal relaxation on public topl-essness, and competition from digital media. This paper argues that the 2021 Sonderheft is not merely a lifestyle magazine but a strategic document that seeks to rejuvenate the FKK movement by rearticulating its core tenets—health, freedom, and respect for nature—through the modern vernacular of mental wellness and body neutrality.
