In July 2021, a joint team from the University of Nairobi and the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology was excavating a cave system in the Makali Hills, a dry, thorny scrubland about 60 kilometers northeast of Mombasa. They weren’t looking for treasure. They were looking for remnants of the 16th-century Swahili-Arab trade networks.
