It does not love you back, not in the way a small town might. London is indifferent. And that indifference is its gift. It allows you to be whoever you want to be. You can walk down the street in a velvet cape, speaking Klingon, and no one will blink.
What saves London from the frantic pace of New York or Tokyo is the green. Londres is a forest pretending to be a city. Hyde Park, Hampstead Heath, Richmond Park (where deer roam like they own the place, because they do). On a sunny day—that rare, precious commodity—the grass vanishes under a blanket of bodies.
