Jun is the creator of the KeyGenguru—a device that allowed cross-platform save transfers, a holy grail in the era of walled gardens. But his true project, hidden in the firmware, was Serial No. 7 : a compression algorithm that could store human memory as sprite data. JUN (whispering into a tape recorder): “If I die, the dongle will remember. It will serialize my ghost across six consoles. Each cartridge holds a fragment of my last 24 hours. Play them in order, and you’ll see who killed me.” The office door slams. A shadow in a trenchcoat. VOICE (off-screen): “The publisher wants the source code, Jun. Not your immortality project.” A struggle. A CRT tips over. Then—silence.
Kai leans closer. The KeyGenguru—a custom parallel-port dongle the size of a Zippo, etched with a leaping fox logo—flickers its red LED. He found it in a surplus bin at a defunct RadioShack. It came with a sticky note: “Plays all six keys. – M.”
