The Legend Behind the Tone Local tradition holds that after the Battle of Karbala (680 CE), when the women and children of the Prophet’s family were taken captive, the Azan was recited for the first time in the ruins by Imam Ali Zayn al-Abidin (the surviving son of Hussain).
