The most remarkable piece of infrastructure in flight simulation is VATSIM (Virtual Air Traffic Simulation Network). Launched in 2001, it is a global, volunteer-run network where real people act as air traffic controllers for other real people flying virtual planes—all in real time, using real phraseology, real charts, and real separation minima. For many, it is also a coping mechanism. Sim forums are filled with pilots who lost their medical certificates due to vision, heart conditions, or age.
