By the early 2000s, Adobe PageMaker had a problem. Launched in 1985, it was the original desktop publishing king . But by version 6.5 (late 1990s), it was showing its age. Adobe had acquired its fierce rival, Aldus PageMaker , in 1994, but then watched as a newer, more nimble competitor — QuarkXPress — ate its lunch.
Adobe Distiller 5.0 was a brilliant engine. PageMaker 7.0 was a fading chassis. Bolting them together kept the car on the road for a few more years, but it never won the race.
